Venice Training School 2025: building the future of safe and sustainable innovation

From 9–13 June 2025, Venice welcomed students, researchers, and professionals from across Europe for the Venice Training School on Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD).

Over five inspiring days, participants explored how to design advanced materials that are not only functional but also safe for people and the environment. The school combined expert lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities, making complex scientific concepts more accessible and practical.

The programme covered a wide spectrum of themes — from European policies guiding SSbD to the latest approaches for assessing the health and environmental impacts of materials. Participants also discovered how new digital tools, modelling techniques, and FAIR data can support better decision-making, and how industry — especially small and medium enterprises — can embrace these methods in real-world applications.

INSIGHT was represented by Prof. Dario Greco, with his “Next generation chemicals and drugs: towards effective, safe, and sustainable products”, his approach underscores the importance of integrating safety and sustainability considerations at every stage, from early design to end-of-life.
Dr. Angela Serra, delivered the presentation “FAIR principles for knowledge graphs in SSbD.” Her talk focused on how FAIR data practices can strengthen the creation of knowledge graphs, making them more interoperable and useful for integrating safety, sustainability, and functionality considerations into the design of advanced materials.

But beyond the technical sessions, the Venice Training School 2025 was also about people. It offered a unique opportunity to connect researchers, policymakers, and innovators, fostering collaboration across different disciplines and projects.
